The back bar is a fundamental ingredient in our craft. It is as
essential as a drawing board to an artist... the music that is playing
at your bar, or the lighting that gives it that extra touch. It is the
first impression you get while entering an establishment and the last,
walking on your way out. Elderly people used to say, "the eyes are
the mirror of your soul.” After a while, I believed that, "the back
bar is the mirror of your establishment.”
Right from the start of it all, the bar and the back bar tell us
stories and reflect the passion of the place. We are drawn to a unique
part of it part we would feel the closest to, whether it was the vibe, the look, the lighting, the size, the energy or just for that someone who works there.

Every one of us gets (their emotions stirred) a certain emotion awoken
within when looking at a shiny, sexy back bar. The back bar gives you
that overwhelming sensation of creative energy. It might even inspire
you to try a totally new and exciting drink. Every single detail that
goes into the back bar matters. For example, tall back bars (in my
humble opinion) are very sexy. They just posses a certain kind of
elegance. Like a beautiful woman, each back bar is unique and, over
time, they just get better.
The material used for the back bar depends on the concept of your
establishment. Mirrors are a nice detail behind the back bar wall,
they emphasize the spirits and give the bartender a second pair of
eyes.

If it’s possible, it’s always nice to keep the glassware above the
waist, so the bartender does not have to reach for it from down
bellow. The exception, of course, is chilled glassware.
The lighting is very important as well. The lights are the mood
setters, but adjusting the light is tricky. Candles are an excellent
choice, as they make the bar seem more approachable and have a
flattering quality of light. Electric candles, regardless of the bars’
aesthetic look, have their advantages. They are economical, since you
don't have to replace them very often. They do require charging, in
which case people make schedules on when exactly they should be
recharged. Regular candles are always a good way to go, they just
provide a unique atmosphere. As for the neon lighting used to light
the bottom of the bottles, try to keep them on an optimal level, so
you reduce the heating of the spirit.Taking care of a back bar is
equally important. By keeping it clean, organized and categorized it
will keep its' functionality and charm.
It’s always nice to see bottles full to the top, the brands straight
in front and the pourers going towards the left, in which case the
label, even when the bottle is being used, is facing the guest. Bar
flies can be a nuisance, so bartenders, usually try to keep the screen
pourers on as many bottles as you can.Looks and functionality go hand
in hand, in which case bartenders should keep tall bottles behind the
lower ones, since it’s easier to reach, especially on those busy
nights.

To me, a back bar is like a true friend- if you treat it
with love, it will return it two-fold.
